1. Common installation issues

- Single user versions of NoteSmith and network renewal versions require installation in two (2) steps. First time network installation requires four (4) steps. The network version will not share data unless the steps in the Installation Guide are followed exactly. Exit the program and complete all steps before proceeding.

- Users who are renewing and have data in an older NoteSmith version must import it from File, Setup. The source data folder defaults to last year's program, so click the Find button if your older data is located somewhere else. If you are on a network and have older data to import, your data should be imported only once, from an old Data folder on the server to the new Data folder on the server.

- NoteSmith does not install a desktop icon. If you have one on your desktop, it was created by someone else and points to an older version of NoteSmith.

- NoteSmith, Pro, and Net all have limited number of installations and program activations. Read the NoteSmith End User License Agreement (NEULA) for details. Once installed and activated, you may move the installation from one computer to another. Directions are in the Installation section of the manual.

- We cannot guarantee, insure, or maintain your computer equipment. If you lose your NoteSmith materials or its original activation for any reason, we can replace it for you at a discounted price but we cannot give you a replacement for free. Details are in the front of the manual and in the NEULA.

- NoteSmith is a desktop application that allows sharing of data by the Network version. The program files are never shared in any version. Terminal Services is not supported. All versions of NoteSmith program files must be installed locally and capable of running on a computer locally without being networked. Workstation users only need to click File, Folder and find the shared data on their local area network. NoteSmith will remember this folder for the next time you start.

2. General information

- NoteSmith has been distributed commercially since 1988. It has been fully Year2000 compatible since then and is, in fact, Y3K compatible.

- The manual is available in print and as a PDF from the Help menu. It has grown over the years based on user questions to support and at help days. Check the manual and FAQ file because it is likely that your question is answered there.

- When you enter new notes the first time, start with simple ones. The following notes all can be serviced properly in NoteSmith, but generate questions from new users: Prepaid interest, accrued but unpaid prorated first payment interest, negative amortizing loans, and interest only loans.

- The program checks monthly for updates to the NoteSmith program file, FAQ file, and newsletter.

- Technical support is available until 12/31 of the publication year by toll free fax and email. To keep prices reasonable, telephone technical support is not available. See Help, Technical Support for details.

3. NoteSmith Tutorial

The tutorial (NSTutorial.pdf) is installed automatically. Depending on changes to the screens, we may not update the tutorial every year.

4. NoteSmith Demo

A NoteSmith demo (NSDemo.pdf) is available at NoteSmith.com, Technical Support, Downloads for distribution to friends or associates who may be interested in NoteSmith. A full color brochure (NSBrochure.pdf) also can be downloaded from the web site.
